City Begins Burning Contents of Burn Pit South of Town

Yesterday (January 25, 2022), the City of Augusta began burning the contents of our burn pit located about ¼ mile south of town.  The burn pit contains compost material (tree limbs, grass clippings, leaves etc.) collected throughout 2021.  The City purposefully began the burning when winds were at a low speed and blowing from the north (away from town).

However, today (January 26, 2022) winds are blowing from the south (towards town) at a slightly higher speed. Residents might notice a smoky odor or at points be able to see smoke in town.  The burning will continue for at least the next week and potentially longer. We would recommend that any residents particularly sensitive to smoke try to stay indoors while winds are blowing from the south (towards town) at higher speeds.
